The Meteor's First Car Show of 2011

Torquemasters Peninsula Car Club held a car show today at Theo's Place and wow did they luck out with the sunshine.  It was a beautiful day.  A bit chilly but lots of Vitamin D.  Blaine and I took the Meteor for it's first jaunt of the season and she purred.  Her clutch sticks a bit however that is in the plans to be changed.

There were many cars at the show and it was wonderful to see everyone.

Enjoy the pictures and thank you Torquemasters.

Plans, Plans, Plans and more Plans

We originally purchased the Meteor to do something off the wall. As we set upon the task of turning a 4000 Lb. boat in to a road race car many different options made their way across the drawing board. While the currently equipped 289 was deemed “adequate” it was decided to go with a power plant a bit more representative of  what our shop can do with a bit of modern technology.  The new Ford Coyote 5.0 was an ideal candidate as it didn’t stray too far from our original goal of a high revving small displacement V-8.  It also has many features that will help with future plans such as dome oilers and forged crank, nodular iron main caps, and 6 bolt mains with upsized fasteners. The quad cam variable cam timing was a big selling point as well.  After a piston/rod change in the future this motor will be ready for a couple of Garrett GT turbos.  This will be coupled to a Tremec T56 Magnum transmission.  To power all of this we are currently planning a Vipec V88 ECU which will allow us to control all aspects of this engine’s operation.
Suspension is next on the list. We did change out the springs and sway bars but that was purely because we couldn’t  stand driving it as it was until we rebuilt it all. Ford Galaxies had a bit of a racing history from the 60’s.  I have not done enough research to know if the Meteor Rideaus did as well but chassis wise they are the same car.  That being said the cars did handle quite well………in the 60’s.  I am no suspension engineer but I am fairly certain that a suspension design based on new technology could benefit this car. On the list is a full independent inboard coil over  front and rear suspension.  The rear end will be a Currie F9 independent center housing with series 30 axles and inboard disc brakes. All of this is an effort to decrease unsprung weight.
Now we need a weight loss strategy. As I stated earlier this beast weighs about 4000 Lbs.  That is before we add a roll cage and Turbo setup.  We are definitely going to have to do something about that if we plan to race this car at some point.  Advancements in composites will help us in this area. Weight savings from composite components such as a hood, trunk lid, doors, fenders, and bumpers could easily shave off a couple hundred pounds.  Lighter seats and removal of unnecessary components could drop a few more pounds.
As far as aerodynamics…………….well not much can be done here.  A flattened belly pan may help but that is a future project.
Now we just need to figure out how to pay for it all. Where did I put that lottery ticket anyway………….

Stuck on Claremont!

I have to say that halfway up Claremont hill is a REALLY bad time for the fuel pump to crap out!   Especially if you don't trust the emergency brake that much.

Anyhow, Totem Towing kindly towed us to 5252 Motorsports where the big red beast now awaits a new fuel pump.  Thank Gosh occupancy inspection is this week so 5252 Motorsports should open this week if the inspection goes well.  Come on Central Saanich - show us some love please.

It has been a busy summer and the Meteor saw some car shows.  With all the work on the shop, the Meteor has been a bit neglected however there are some big plans for it including dropping in a 2011 Coyote Engine from Ford.......keep tuned to this blog to see how it goes.

Lotsa Room to Work

Loving this engine compartment!!

While driving the Meteor, we noticed excessive blue smoke out of the driver's side exhaust pipe - a bit embarrassing when pulling into Francelli's car show or some other motor enthusiast gathering.  After disassembling and inspecting, we found the valve guide on cylinder 4 intake was almost worn completely through and cracked.

So off to the machine shop the heads have gone.  As soon as they come back, the Meteor will be up and running again.

We can't wait.

See you soon
